Tuning into teens
is an evidence-based program using the principles of emotional intelligence and emotion coaching to enhance parenting skills. The program aims to teach you how to manage your own and your adolescent’s emotions in ways that help you to remain close and keep communicating. The program aims to assist parents develop skills in talking with their teens about emotions, develop emotional intelligence in teens, and help with conflict management in the home. Tuning in to Teens is a six-week parenting program run one evening a week for two hours. Research has shown that adolescents with greater emotional intelligence: are more aware, assertive, and strong in situations with peer pressure have greater success with making friends and are more able to manage conflict with peers are more able to cope when upset or angry have fewer mental health and substance abuse difficulties have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults have greater career success - emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ.

Tuning in to Teens is appropriate for most parents and caregivers of young people aged 12-18 years of age.
In John Gottman et al., research on the way parents responded to their children’s emotion, they found that Emotion Coaching was most strongly related to the development of emotional intelligence in children.
The 5 essential steps in emotion coaching are:
- Being aware of young person’s emotion
- View emotions as opportunities for connecting and teaching
- Listen and accept all emotions
- Help your teen label their emotions
- Help them solve problems- if appropriate!
You will be taught skills of “Emotion Coaching” and will be practicing these skills throughout the course. The group will also involve watching video materials, group discussions, practice opportunities and home activities. Parents are encouraged to share experiences and ideas within the group. If appropriate and comfortable, the facilitators may use examples to explain and teach the skills.
Groups will have a maximum of 12 parents and be run with 1 or 2 facilitators.
The group will cost $600 pp or $1100 per couple which includes group facilitators, resources and light refreshments.
The group runs for 2 hours once a week for 6 consecutive weeks.
